Tokyo Revengers products and the Manji symbol
Some of you may be surprised to learn that the Manji symbol is often seen on Tokyo Revengers products. The symbol is very similar to another symbol of German history and therefore makes many people uncomfortable. For this reason, we would like to briefly explain to you what the symbol means in Japan and why there are products with this symbol. First of all, we would like to make it clear that we condemn any form of anti-semitism and racism and would like to assure our customers that our products do not glorify or defend these topics in any way!
Most stories in anime and manga are set in Japan. As in large parts of Asia, Buddhism is widespread there and thus its symbolism is also a big part of everyday culture. So, for example, you'll find the Manji a lot on city maps and it's simply the marker there that a temple is located at that spot.
In Asia, the Manji sign stands for an auspicious symbol of divinity. The symbol is much older than Buddhism itself, even though it has gained a lot of popularity through Buddhism. Besides Buddhism, it is also a religious symbol of Jainism and Hinduism. So it is possible to see the Manji on some products, currently especially in the Tokyo Revengers series, which also has the symbol in its original title, since the stories are set in a different cultural space and the symbol has a different meaning for them than what we associate with it. So should you have a manji on a product, always pay attention to where the story is set and what content is meant to be conveyed with the depiction and use of the symbol. Understanding this context will help in evaluating the items. In the case of Tokyo Revengers, it is to be understood as precisely the symbol from Buddhism and has no connection with the symbol as we know it from our history.
